Filmul ne prezinta primele 24 de ore de antrenament ale novicelui Jake Hoyt(Ethan Hawke) in brigada narcotice din Los Angeles. Cel care il initiaza in lupta impotriva traficantilor de droguri este Alonzo Harris(Denzel Washington), un politist uns cu toate alifiile, a carui practici sunt neortodoxe si uneori chiar ilegale. Alonzo ii cunoaste foarte bine pe infractori si nu este intimidat de acestia, chiar dimpotriva. Jake are mentalitatea unui politist corect pana la paroxism si asta il face sa para naiv.
