   John Brickner este un pușcăriaș eliberat condiționat. Veronica, rămasă văduvă după ce Brickner i-a omorât soțul, îi dezvăluie acestuia motivul pentru care i-a semnat eliberarea condiționată: el trebuie să acopere cheltuielile unei intervenții chirurgicale pe cordul fiicei victimei.
