Gabriel Bryne interpreteaza rolul parintelui Kiernan, un tanar preot iezuit a carui diploma in chimie ii acorda rolul unui preot-detectiv, care se ocupa cu investigarea fenomenelor inexplicabile aparute in bisericile din intreaga lume. Cand Vaticanul afla de ciudata poveste a unei femei, Frankie, (Patricia Arquette) pe trupul careia apar din senin semne asemanatoare crucificarii, parintele Kiernan este delegat sa cerceteze cazul. Insa aceasta situatie, cunoscuta in lumea ecleziastica sub numele de stigmata, este mult complicata de faptul ca Frankie este atee, iar de obicei insemnele rastignirii apar pe trupurile persoanelor credincioase. Prima persoana din istorie afectata de stigmata este Francisc de Assisi, de care insa Frankie nici macar nu a auzit. Situatia devine si mai greu de inteles in momentul in care Frankie incepe sa leviteze cu trupul asezat in pozitia crucificarii si transmite mesaje in limba aramaica. Parintele Kiernan intelege ca tanara este posedata de ceva, sau de cineva, iar mesajul transmis de femeie provine de pe timpul lui Iisus…
Description: Stigmata is a controversial film directed by Rupert Wainwright that premiered on September 10, 1999. It follows the conflict between Frankie, an atheist Pittsburgh hairdresser played by Patricia Arquette who exhibits true stigmata and Father Andrew Kiernan (played by Gabriel Byrne), a former scientist and ordained Jesuit priest who, as part of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, investigates miracles for the Vatican. Kiernan soon discovers that the stigmata stems from the spirit of Father Paul Alemieda; a deeply religious priest who was ex-communicated from the Catholic Church for his discovery of a lost Gospel undermining the very foundations of Catholicism. The movie is loosely based on the discovery of the Gospel of Thomas; a document which the Vatican and most other Christians have declared as being the product of a heretical Gnostic group. Father Andrew Kiernan, a researcher of miracles on behalf of the Vatican, must discover the truth behind hairdresser Frankie Paige, who exhibits the Stigmata, the physical wounds Christ received from his crucifixion. His investigation is riddled with questions as he is torn between helping Frankie and revealing the discovery of a long-lost Gospel that would spell disaster for the future of the Catholic church.
