Regizorul Ridley Scott este binecunoscut pentru superproductii precum Gladiator / Gladiatorul, Blade Runner sau Black Hawk Down / Elicopter la pamant. De data aceasta, el aduce pe marele ecran o perioada extrem de agitata si tulbure din istoria omenirii – cruciadele – si povestea unui tanar cavaler francez, Balian, la origine un modest fierar, pe care circumstantele il transforma in conducator militar si aparator al Ierusalimului.
Punctul de pornire in destinul eroic al lui Balian (Orlando Bloom) il constituie intalnirea cu un cruciat, cavalerul Godfrey of Ibelin (Liam Neeson). Dezvaluindu-i faptul ca este tatal sau, Godfrey ii arata lui Balian ce inseamna cu adevarat rangul de cavaler si il ia cu el in Regatul Cerului, in Sfanta Cetate a Ierusalimului.
In acea perioada – situata intre a doua si a treia cruciada – in Ierusalim domnea o pace fragila, mentinuta datorita eforturilor regelui Baldwin al IV-lea si a consilierului sau Tiberias (Jeremy Irons), sustinuti de o serie de cavaleri, printre care si Godfrey of Ibelin, care au jurat sa apere acest regat cu pretul vietii lor.
