Kate(Reese Witherspoon ) si Brad, un cuplu fericit din San Francisco, obisnuiesc sa isi petreaca toate sarbatorile de iarna evitandu-si familiile numeroase si plecand in excursii exotice cat mai departe de casa. Numai ca in dimineata de Craciun toate zborurile sunt anulate din pricina vremii nefavorabile, iar cei doi tineri nu mai gasesc nici o scuza onorabila pentru a nu isi vizita toti cei patru parinti divortati si recasatoriti cu alte persoane, motiv pentru care, intr-o singura zi, ei sunt nevoiti sa faca un adevarat tur de forta, fugind de la o reuniune de familie la alta, amintindu-si de spaimele copilariei si de suferintele adolescentei si punand la indoiala pentru prima data viitorul lor impreuna. In vreme ce Brad (Vince Vaughn) numara orele ramase pana cand va putea scapa de parintii naturali, de parintii vitregi, de socrii, de frati si de adunatura pestrita de nepoti si nepoate, Kate incepe sa auda ticaitul ceasului ei biologic si se intreaba daca nu cumva alegerile in aparenta nebunesti pe care le-au facut membrii familiilor lor nu au fost pana la urma chiar atat de nebunesti.
