Ceea ce nu stie Jake Vig (Edward Burns) poate fi chiar ceea ce il poate ucide. Jake este un hot viclean si foarte istet, care a sustras mii de dolari de la un “oarecare” Lionel Dolby, ajutat fiind de echipa sa din care fac parte: Gordo (Paul Giamatti), Shills Miles (Brian Van Holt), Big Al si doi ofiteri corupti ai politiei din Los Angeles – Lloyd Whitworth (Donal Logue) si Omar Manzano (Luis Guzman).
Cand Lionel si Big Al mor, devine clar faptul ca Lionel nu era un oarecare, iar Jake descopera curand ca acesta era unul dintre contabilii excentricului boss al crimei, Winston King (Dustin Hoffman). Fiind un adevarat competitor, gata oricand sa raspunda provocarilor, Jake se ofera sa-l rasplateasca pe “King” dand in numele lui o lovitura de mare clasa, cea mai mare din cariera sa.
Tinta? Morgan Gillette, un banker care are adanci legaturi cu crima organizata. Avand planuri atat de mari, Jake decide sa o aduca in echipa sa pe blonda Lily (Rachel Weisz) – o hoata de buzunare care ar urma sa faca parte dintr-o schema complexa ce include tot felul de tertipuri si smecherii financiare. Primul semn care anunta necazuri este momentul in care Lily vine “la serviciu” proaspat vopsita roscat, fapt care e considerat de echipa ca prevestitor de nenorociri. Pentru ca situatia sa fie si mai dificila, Jake trebuie sa scape si de vechiul sau “prieten”, agentul FBI Gunther Butan (Andy Garcia), de agentul lui King, Travis (Morris Chestnut), dar si de un partener care joaca in ambele tabere.
