Casino (1995)
Zilele trecute am îndrăznit să fac o scurtă plimbare în trecut. Motivul a fost unul dintre filmele lui Martin Scorsese. Realizat în urmă cu 13 ani şi având o durată de aproape 3 ore, Casino se anunţa a fi o mare pierdere de timp şi o sursă perfectă de plictiseală provocatoare de somn. Însă… hei, era vorba despre unul dintre cei mai talentaţi regizori încă în viaţă, despre un actor – Robert DeNiro, a cărui simplă prezenţă pe generic creşte valoarea unui film şi despre o actriţă – Sharon Stone, care captează instantaneu atenţia a milioane de bărbaţi. Povestea (aşa cum îi stă bine oricărui scenariu hollywoodian) a fost inspirată după nişte fapte reale, publicate într-o carte, de către Nicholas Pileggi. Acesta a fost, de altfel, şi colaboratorul lui Scorsese la realizarea scenariului pentru Casino. În prim plan se află operaţiunile mafiei din Las Vegas. Regizorul filmelor Mean Streets si GoodFellas pare că nu vrea, în ruptul capului, să abandoneze un subiect atât de uzat şi îşi invită privitorii la aceeaşi poveste anostă, ornată cu mult sânge, oase rupte (la un moment-dat capul unui tip este strivit într-o menghină până îi sare ochii din orbite), crime, femei fatale şi mulţi şmecheri care nu vor altceva decât să câştige bani fără prea mult efort. În mod straniu, rolul din acest film i-a adus actriţei Sharon Stone singura nominalizare, din întreaga ei carieră, la premiile Oscar şi un Glob de Aur pentru cea mai bună interpretare feminină într-o dramă. Cel mai probabil cei care au votat au fost atât de fascinaţi de părul ei blond, picioarele ei lungi, precum şi de alte părţi anatomice încât au spus că măcar pentru atât lucru şi tot merită o recompensă cât de mică…
Summary: Sam “Ace” Rothstein, the consummate bookie who can change the odds merely by placing a bet, has risen through the ranks of the Midwestern mob to be picked by the bosses to front their entree into Vegas. Ace lives and breathes the odds. He eventually doubles the mob’s take and changes the rules of how the casinos are run. But he can’t control the odds when it comes to Ginger McKenna, the chip-hustling vamp who charms Ace and becomes his wife. His infatuation with Ginger turns to obsession as she rises with him to the upper crust of society, then turns to the bottle and pills for consolation in her gilded cage. The third member of this triangle of greed and obsession is Nicky Santoro, Ace’s best friend and fellow graduate of the city streets. Together, they run the perfect operation, with Ace in charge and Nicky providing the muscle. But as Nicky expands his interests and each man gains power, their lives become entangled in a story of hot tempers, obstinacy, money, love and deception.
