Jackie Kallen este o tanara indragostita de box ajunge prima femeie manager de box din lume unde se tin marile gale de box. Aici se cearta cu unul dintre marii manageri de box si acesta ii da un boxeur pe un dolar. Doar ca ea isi face curaj si impinge un alt boxeur in fata. Si cand succesul vine, incep sa apara problemele, pentru ca mai marii boxului nu pot concepe ca se vor lupta de la egal la egal cu o femeie. Kallen a facut fata multor probleme si atacuri la adresa sa pentru a deveni manager sportiv.  Timp de trei ani in industrie, l-a ajutat pe James Toney sa ajunga sa lupte la categoria mijlocie. Filmul este inspirat din povestea reala a celei mai faimoase promotoare din boxul profesionist in SUA, Jackie Hallen, precum si de lupta ei pentru a supravietui si a avea succes intr-o lume dominata de barbati.

Description: A Jewish woman from Detroit who became a boxing manager, guiding several major careers. This film focuses on her relationship with one boxer (Epps), who’s reportedly a composite of several including Toney, McKart and Hearns. Kallen eventually left her husband of 30 years, and moved to Los Angeles, becoming the commissioner of the International Female Boxers Association.

Charles S. Dutton’s feature-length directorial debut Against the Ropes is based on the real-life story of Jackie Kallen, a Jewish woman from Detroit who became a successful boxing manager. Played by Meg Ryan, Kallen works her way up in the world of boxing by believing in the fighting skills of Luther Shaw (Omar Epps). Director Dutton appears as veteran trainer Felix Reynolds, whom Kallen encourages to come out of retirement.
